Phase 1 Completed
Uig is situated on the Isle of Skye’s North Coast on the shores of Loch Snizort and has a population of around 450. Uig is the main ferry terminal for the Outer Hebridean Islands and extremely busy with visitors and freight all year round. It takes around 6 hours to travel from the central belt of Scotland to site by car.
RJ McLeod has been contracted by Highland Council to carry out infrastructure improvement works at Uig Harbour. The project will bring an extended marshalling area, berthing structure strengthening and widening, linkspan replacement, approach way repair and widening, a relocated new waiting shelter, a new terminal building, dredging and utility provision.
CRL Scotland have been sub-contracted to RJ McLeod to access and repair the main approach way and pier head beams, columns and concrete soffits of the deck.
Work is being carried out in a “live environment” meaning the public had access to the deck for transport to the ferries at the linkspan and RJ McLeod were carrying out main contractors works adjacent to CRL, such as sheet piling.
Being a marine environment, CRL were working in the tidal zone and so shift work was required along with tight time schedules and programming. This has made the contract a challenge to say the least.
Phase 1 has now been completed with a value of just over £1M and we will return in 2023 to complete the Phase 2 works compromising repairs to the pier head, valued at around £2M.
