CRL Scotland has been awarded the specialist contractor package by SPEN to deliver extensive concrete repairs to the North Transmission Tower, which carries high-voltage lines across the Firth of Forth.
Kincardine Tower (XD130) is the tallest transmission tower in Scotland, standing at 153.9 metres. As a vital part of the electricity transmission network, it supports the 275kV line across the River Forth.
The site is located within the former Longannet Power Station grounds, which were demolished in 2021 and are now undergoing redevelopment. The tower foundations are supported by driven pre-cast piles, grouped under five pile cap heads, four supporting the tower legs and one carrying the end of the access bridge.
All of these works are situated within the tidal zone of the Forth estuary, where operations must be delivered in line with strict programme requirements, quality controls, and tide times. The scope of works includes hydro-demolition, reinforcement steel repairs, anode installation, dry-spray concrete reinstatement, and follow-on blacksmith works.
Environmental protection measures are also being closely monitored. Notably, an otter holt is located beneath the landward end of the access bridge, which must remain undisturbed throughout the project.
